Our Mission

To provide a welcoming and trusted community space for neighbors to gather, learn, gain skills, access resources and build local community capacity before, during, and after emergencies.

Our Vision

To expand local resilience through consistent, quality programming that aligns with residents’ priorities and prepare them for increasing storms, flooding, and intensifying weather patterns. At the same time, we hope to create a safe space for people to gather, share knowledge, and grow as a community.

Our story

The Olneyville Resilience Hub (El Hub) at the Joslin Recreation Center grew out of conversations between the City of Providence’s Sustainability Department, Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, and Olneyville Neighborhood Association, each of which recognized the need for a welcoming space in Olneyville where community members could come together and be empowered to build local capacity and resilience. The Hub opened in January 2024, providing programs and services aligned with a broad range of community-identified priorities, and with the goal of growing into a space that offers supportive services during emergencies.

Since opening, the Hub has hosted language exchanges and English classes, health and vaccine clinics, youth mental health services, a community speakers’ series that invites relevant organizations to present their work to residents, and much more. The Hub also received a project-based grant to educate the community about the presence of lead pipes in their neighborhoods and provided more than 2,000 lead filters to Central Providence residents in 2023-2024.

Liaison

The CRC

The Community Resilience Committee (CRC) is a group of residents who serve as liaisons between community and staff, listening to the needs and desires of the community and working with staff to identity partnerships and organizations needed to fulfill them. The CRC works closely with the Resilience Hub Liaison and the Resilience Hub Coordinator to stay up to date on upcoming events, emerging priorities, facility needs, and future planning for the Hub.
